Frake is a West African hardwood that is beautiful, but often used inside plywood due to its lower stability and durability.
However, when treated with our Thermodified process, it acquires a golden colour as well as enhanced stability and durability, making this FSC® certified timber perfect for cladding projects.
Ecochoice’s thermodified Frake has been used in a range of lovely projects across the UK, but Alfriston School is one of our favourites.
Architects Duggan Morris won a RIBA design award for this swimming pool project where attention to the surrounding environment as well as to minute detailing achieved a great blend of form and purpose to the all-girls school – here’s a nice article with more on the project’s details.
FSC certified Frake cladding weathers relatively quickly to a beautiful silver grey which is much prized by end users.
The project went for 18x140mm PAR boards which were pre-assembled as panels off-site. For safety reasons, they were also fire-treated (due to its increased porosity, Frake takes up the fire retardant treatment really well).
Frake cladding is available in a wide range of profiles, including TGV, tongue-and-groove, ship-lap, feather edge and many others. Standard sizes are 18mm thick by 90mm, 140 and 185mm wide.
